Tulum is a magical experience and I would recommend it to everyone to experience at least once. The jungle meets beach vibe in a magical atmosphere and around every corner there is something beautiful to see. From the exquisitely designed hotels to the dazzling restaurants Tulum will capture your heart. I’d say it’s likely the most trendy, bohemian chic place in the Caribbean. Holistic health meets fashion forward in this beach front escape. Tulum prides itself in eco-tourism and sustainability which makes it a unique place compared to your typical vacation spot. You can immerse yourself in the culture and truly awaken your spiritual self here. Tulum embraces the Mayan culture, Yoga, Sound Healing, healthy eating and so much more that guides you on a spiritual journey. I think the closest comparison from travel blogs I have read would be Bali because of the immersive wellness experience each place encompasses.

One thing I should definitely add is although it totally has this wellness aura to it, it is also a huge party spot. It is famously known for NYE festivities (I’ve been it was chaos) and it’s a great bachelor/ bachelorette destination. I have been to Tulum 4 times and have done my fair share of partying here. For my 30th birthday trip I decided I wanted to party less and immerse myself in the wellness of the place more. I think this is the best way to enjoy Tulum. I have met a few people that have moved to Tulum and become professional yoga instructors and health coaches and it makes so much sense to me. There’s a sense of health and wellness here that makes you feel complete with simply being one with nature and exploring the best possible version of you.

I don’t talk about it on my social media but this year I struggled with my health and it took a toll on my mind and body. Just before coming to Tulum, after seeing many health specialists, I finally had gotten the right treatment and was getting better. It seemed like God was giving me a perfect ending to all the struggles I had dealt with this year in the best place to rediscover your wellness era, Tulum. It truly got me back on track to find my best self.

My favorite things to do in Tulum are explore the culture of the Mayans, bike ride, shop at the boho boutiques, practice yoga and eat some of the best organic cuisines at beautiful restaurants. I love walking throughout Tulum and seeing something amazing in every corner. Tulum is built around the nature and it is not only a sight to see but makes you feel a certain type of way. They say that being around nature opens your mind and in Tulum I know this is true. Tulum is a beach town tucked away in the jungle and one of the first places inhabited by the Mayans. If you are not educated on the Mayan culture a trip to Tulum is a great way to start. There is so much to learn from the Mayan way of life and after three times here I am learning that it is an amazing way of living. Mayan’s practice some amazing traditions that you can experience in Tulum, like Temazcal ceremonies and beach meditations. A temazcal is a sweat lodge where you set intensions with a shaman in a hut full of white volcanic rocks and burning copal. I would highly recommend the Temazcal at Holistika. The shaman guided us through a beautiful session where he gave us spearmint to smell and reminded us to embrace our inner childlike fairies. The entire practice was so awakening but I would recommend spending the extra money for a private session, rather than the group session. I for one felt a bit claustrophobic in the sweat lodge surrounded by other strangers so would definitely prefer to do it alone next time!

When you walk the narrow beach road you’ll be reminded by lifes blessings and the power of presence with street signs reading things like “Follow that dream” and “You’re exactly where you need to be.” The Mayans practice living in a better world of creativity, sparkle and consciousness, something I believe many Americans need to learn. Some people come to Tulum to simply party but if you come here to learn it can do a number for your well being. I truly feel like since the first time I came to Tulum in 2019 I have grown so much from my knowledge of Mayan Culture. It has taught me the power of presence, to be conscious of the Earth we live in, and the spirituality of nature.

A lot of hotels in Tulum choose candle lit over electricity and have minimal amenities. They cling to nature, building properties around it and prefer the authenticity of things over normality. Tulum has a makeshift sewage system and every time after I go to Tulum I find myself back in America putting the toilet paper in the waste basket instead of flushing it. This is something you MUST do when you’re visiting Tulum because water is legitimately trucked in to this off the grid town. I’d like to politely call Tulum hobo chic, with it’s nomadic, handmade characteristics you are essentially, at many hotels on the beach, camping in the most chic way possible.

If this doesn't sound ideal to you there are other options for sure. If you’re willing to spend money the best high profile option on the beach would be Casa Malca. This elite hotel property is Pablo Escobar’s former mansion and has fancy amenities for anyone who wants the best of both worlds. I would also recommend Ahau and Kanan on the hotel zone area of the beach for a 5 star experience while being in the hot spot of all the places to shop and eat in Tulum. Before I discuss where I recommend staying in full detail I want to jump into something a bit more exciting, where to dine, get coffee, and where to dance!

Tulum is home to some of the most amazing restaurants in the world. The organic cuisine is remarkable and the restaurants are created again along nature and each unique. Many restaurants have burning copal to keep away mosquitos and hold onto Mayan vibes. Before going anywhere, I spend a lot of time researching lifestyle and travel blogs. When I am vacationing, and in general, I like to try as many places as possible. Even if it means walking in and out of the wrong place I find a way to see it all. Your wildest culinary dreams will come true in Tulum.

where to dine:

If you follow along you know by now that I love going out to eat. Chic restaurant experiences are the key to my heart. It amazes me how a whole experience can be created with decor and design and I just love seeing the unique places all over the world. From party dinners to relaxing lunches and with all the best food here is my list of favorites in the most stylist place in Mexico.

Rosa Negra: Amazing cocktails and exceptional service. They have a mixologist on site with a bar cart and the food is a tribute to Latin American Cuisine. This was like a party at dinner, we went at the perfect time, around 8:00pm and when our dinner was wrapping up there was a huge celebration which I truly can’t explain you just need to see for yourself!

Azulik: Views for days, one of the few places that has an above view of Tulum. It is the most romantic spot in Tulum, with no electricity and candles all throughout the resort. You feel like you’re in a treehouse but make it chic and upscale. Go to Tseen Ja in Azulik for the best sushi of your life! I got the salmon avocado roll and had them torch the salmon it was insane. After dinner, ask your server to escort you to the club downstairs. They have an awesome DJ and beautiful decor with a touch of pink. I got an espresso martini and a maracuya mezcal drink!

Casa Jaguar: This jungle restaurant across from the beach is the ultimate experience. The food and drinks were great, if you like spicy drinks get the ! They have a boutique in the restaurant as well and it is full of amazing pieces. I took my mezcal drink and shopped around the boutique and got some amazing finds. Some items aren’t as pricy as others but for the seashell top previously bought by Dua Lipa you may be breaking the bank!

Maresias @ Be Tulum: The most epic spot. We had the perfect dinner here. It is right on the beach and they have a DJ performing throughout the night. It felt like we were in Ibiza with the euro vibe music.

La Popular @ Nomade: Morroccan style seating on the beach. I suggest coming here for lunch! We sat at a lovely table overlooking the beach and we’re lucky enough to have little kittens join us!

Philosophy @ Casa Malca: Gorgeous indoor dinner at the mansion of Pablo Escobar. You cannot go wrong with this vintage decor and reminiscing touches. Make sure to go outside and check out the entryway with the vintage wedding dresses curtain. Antique furniture hangs down in the center of the curtains and it will be the chicest swing set scene you have ever experienced. It’s probably my favorite piece of art I have ever seen.

Gramercy: Swings, sunsets and a great deal on all you can drink beer. Probably one of the least expensive spots in the Hotel Center.

Loco Tulum: This Mediterranean spot is a must! They have awesome vegan options and $1 tequila shots! I don’t think I have ever seen such a thing! We got the tofu beet salad and the falafel plate. So yum!

Burrito Amor: Go here for the best burrito of your life! You will not be disappointed, they also have Vegan options.

Where to get coffee:

(or matcha, juice, whatever you prefer)

Raw Love: This jungle cafè at Ahau hotel is the perfect spot to chill, read a book, and relax with a latte and even an acai bowl. I normally chose oat milk but in Tulum the Coconut milk was the best I’ve ever had! I also started my days with a ginger shot for a morning cleanse.

Matcha Mama: The hottest spot to grab a matcha. Start your day with a swing in this vibrating colorful cafe. There is 3 locations so you cannot miss it! One across from the beach, one in Tulum town, and one in Aldea Zama.

The Real Coconut: Located on the beach, this place feels like the spot to go to for Americans. So many people were on their laptops working in there as well and it was very peaceful. My only complaint is that it was extremely windy at the seat we were at so sit further away from the open windows.

Where to Dance:

To note: In Tulum most dinner spots are parties in itself but here are my favorite spots to daaancce the night away! *Insert Barbie the movie soundrack here.

It Tulum: One of the best spots that I feel like no one talks about! It’s surrounding a cenote and such good vibes. Another party at dinner but turns to a full party with a great DJ and everyone dancing. The cops came one of the nights we went there and everyone that was dancing had to immediately stop dancing and grab a seat at any table they could find. It was really funny, felt like I was in a scene of Dirty Dancing.

La Guarida: This is one of my favorite spots to go out in Tulum TOWN. A lot of locals frequent this spot and you might fall in love with a mexican man for the night like me. If you have even been to the bungalow in LA this is very similar to me. They have unique rooms throughout the venue with movies, books, and vinyls. Theres also a rooftop here and it’s an amazing atmosphere with fun music and a dance floor.

Bagatelle: Cool beach club during the day turns to a party vibe at night. This is definitely the spot to go if you want to party but I will say when I came here for dinner once it was a mess, they forgot to bring out our entrees and our dinner became a full on rage. Bagatelle used to also be in NYC and I had been a few times before. It actually closed because they were seating people based on attractiveness which I find hilarious.

Gitano: This chic Jungle Bar is the beach’s Friday club spot and I loved every second of it. It was very chill, beachy and a disco ball lighting up the room for a dance party in the sparkly forest.

Papaya Playa Project: Weekly events here so check before going! It may be dead if there is not an event happening. This was so cool, there was a huge dance floor with a DJ along the beach, taco stands, people getting glitter painted on their faces, and even a coffee/ juice bar! I of course got a shot of tequila and put it in my carrot ginger juice and I would recommend you doing the same.

Ikal Tulum: Located in Playa Paraiso, this Saturday spot has a live band, good vibes and great food.

Where to Shop:

Lolita Lolita Tulum: Outside of Lolita Lolita is a sign that says Follow that Dream. If that doesn’t entice you to go in then the products sure will. Not only are the clothes the epitome of boho style but they have a section of sex candles, amazing incense, love potion pens, and the best mezcal I have ever tasted. It was my type of shopping experience for sure!

La Tiendita Tulum: The cutest boutique with the epitome of Tulum bohemian style pieces. The handmade pieces were so well done, even the tags on the clothes were beautiful. I wanted to buy everything in the store!

La Bikineria- This boutique had me hooked with the most perfect bikinis for any girly girl. Sparkles, ruffles, flirty prints, I was obsessed with everything they had to offer. Not to mention the scuncis that match almost every bikini in the store! La Bikineria Instagram

Casa Jaguar Tulum: A fun restaurant but with a boutique inside! Last time I came to Tulum I found the most special top here that was handmade by the wonderful Maria Tahues and I brought it back to wear during this trip! They also have a swim store down the street a bit called Casa Jaguar Swim and have amazing accessories including a hat I had to pass up because it was a little too expensive.

Pop Saint Barth: Amazing colorful finds and great prices. Some of the pieces are even handmade by the owner! Pop Saint Barth

Where to stay:

My advice is to split your time and try staying in the town and on the beach. Spend a few nights with the sound of the waves and splendid views, and then a few nights in the jungle vibes of town or Aldea Zama. The town has a more authentic Mexican feel while the beach is more of a party vibe. The beach (Hotel Zone) is also more expensive than the town. If you don’t have that budget there are cheaper options with better amenities in the areas of Aldea Zama and Tulum town. I would highly suggest Aldea Zama as the best spot for WiFi and “American” like amenities. My favorite spot in Aldea Zama is Kimpton Aluna Hotel.

Kimpton Aluna Tulum:

This was my second time staying at Kimpton Aluna and it feels like home to me. Kimpton Aluna Hotel in Tulum, Mexico is located in Aldea Zama. Aldea Zama is a trendy neighborhood 1 mile from the beach. Aluna provides guests with free bikes and you can bike ride to the beach or to the nearby shops and restaurants. I took a morning bike ride everyday to the cutest nearby cafè eat at Liefs. Aluna offers daily breakfast for guests in their jungle restaurant. They have 2 gorgeous pools on the property, one on the ground floor and one on the rooftop. The hotel is in a jungle setting but has amazing amenities and exceptionally clean. The hotel staff were friendly and attentive. They even celebrate Mayan culture with a check in ritual of writing down something negative that you’d like to let go of and burning it. They provide free bikes for guests and you can bike 5 minutes to the town or 20 minutes to the beach.

The hotel staff was some of the nicest people I have ever met and they will be forever friends. A relaxing jungle vibe by the pool with exceptional service. I recommend the avocado, hummus with fresh pita for an appetizer. I have never combined these two and it was so tasty! They also have an amazing flatbread pizza with a Mexican twist. It has salsa instead of marinara sauce and a unique cheese, that I’d like to call Mexican Mozzarella but it is actually Oaxaca cheese.

Nerea Tulum:

Nerea Tulum is located right on the beach and is a destination in itself. We stayed here for 4 days and quite literally didn’t leave. This is so not typical for me as I love to leave the hotel and go to shops and restaurants outside of a property and explore the place where I am. I typically get stir crazy but Nerea had so much to offer at the property that I didn’t feel the need to leave. Nerea Tulum is a luxury boutique hotel located on the ocean. My oceanfront suite was hard to leave and the perfect place to fall asleep with the sounds of the waves right outside my door. They also have an infinity pool that wraps around the entire property. They offer breakfast + lunch to guests and every morning I enjoyed an amazing seasonal fruit plate, coconut cappuccino and veggie omelette. For lunch I highly recommend the guacamole + cheese sticks. The light pastries filled with oaxacan cheese will be in my dreams along with these gorgeous views. Nerea also offer guests sunrise yoga on Tuesdays + Fridays, spa services right on their gorgeous pier and kayaks, scuba gear and paddle boards for guests to use for an adventure to the nearby coral reefs! Nerea also has a gorgeous large infinity pool that wraps around the entire property. It’s truly the perfect hotel for a wellness retreat.

Tulum Town:

Also known as Centro, Tulum town is cheaper and more of a locals spot than the beach area which is called Hotel Zone. It has a unique vibe and I would definitely recommend going here at least once. Here are my favorite spots for your visit in the Town:

La Guarida: I already mentioned this spot in the Where to Dance section of my blog but I thought it deserved a second shout out as this is one of my favorite spots to go out in Tulum. I came here on my birthday this year and it was the most fun night ever!

Eat at Liefs: A couple moved to Tulum from Amsterdam and created this quaint spot on the side of the road that you can drive your bikes up to and sit. It has delicate flowers in dutch vases and amazing vegan options.

Caribe Swing: This place is the best! There was a dance floor, swings to swing on by the bar, fun bartenders, and a full place of people with great vibes. It was so much fun and definitely the spot to be. We didn’t eat here but the pasta and pizzas also looked phenomenal.

Batey: Mojito Bar with a live band in the back. It is in town authentic Mexican feels and a great night out hotspot.

Estancia Jujena: The perfect place for a #pfg girl. If you haven’t caught on PFG stands for pink feed goals :) This place is the most pink you can get and even serves coffee in a pink pastel mug. It also has amazing breakfast options, yummy smoothies, and serves oven fresh pizza in the evening.

Vucciria: Sicilian restaurant in Tulum with the ultimate Euro Vibe. The espresso martinis were amazing and they also had rosemary potatoes which smelt so good that I had to order!

Tulum Adventures:

If you take any advice from me for your trip to Tulum, it must be doing a guided trip with Ismael of Mayikal Experiences ! They are native guides and do taylor made adventures. “Immerse yourself into a life time experience, exploring the magic of nature, culture and history.” We were able to do things that I never could have done alone and it was an unforgettable experience. Ismael took us to Coba, biking through the jungle to see the Mayan ruins, to a private cenote, shopping in Coqui Coqui, and my personal favorite to a Mayan home for lunch. The Mayan home was also a animal refugee as the family housed endangered species like White Tail Deer and unique birds. We were cooked a traditional lunch by the family and everything tasted amazing. We even were able to pat out the tortillas in the outdoor kitchen with the owner of the home for our meal!

What to Wear:

Tulum, Mexico is one of the most stylish beach towns in the Caribbean and the fashion is iconic. Bohemian chic is the style and you will want to pack any and all of the linen clothes you have.

You need sandals for beach days and platforms or comfortable heels for dinner and nights out. I was asked by a friend whether or not to bring heels and I think yes! At night, people are definitely dressed up but in a beachy way. Bring heels but make sure they are your most comfortable pair as you may end up partying at a spot right on the sandy beaches.

Things to NOTE before heading to tulum:

Please be aware and on guard when you go out in Tulum. This was my first time going with just girls and not a boyfriend and I couldn’t believe how different I felt. There was some parts of Tulum that I honestly felt uncomfortable in and I never realized that when I was with a man, which is unfortunate to say. Stay with your group of friends and be alert at all times.

You need cash! Pesos are best to take out before the trip but they do accept American cash too. They now charge a 5-10% fee on credit card transactions for cabs which I swear wasn’t a thing in the past.

Tulum is an hour and 45 minute drive from the airport but there’s sometimes a lot of traffic so give yourself time to get to and from the airport and make sure to schedule airport transportation from the aiport to your hotel upon arrival. For departures, your best and cheapest options is taking a taxi from the hotel, most hotels will schedule your taxi for you if you just ask.

Practice some Spanish! It’s important to note that you will have a much easier time getting around, talking to taxi drivers, waiters, hotel staff, etc, if you know some Spanish. I studied Spanish for years in school and every time I head back I try to practice a little bit, it makes the workers feel excited and it helps them a lot because many are not fluent in English.

The water in Mexico isn’t just bad to drink, it also does not do anything for my hair. My hair was so hard to tame from the water and the humidity. I would suggest bringing detangler for the knots, leave in conditioner, oils, and your own personal shampoo and conditioners.
